Adult Sail Training

Welcome to Penarth Yacht Club Adult Sail Training 2019

Our courses are Royal Yachting Association (RYA) affiliated and run by adult volunteers who, for the most part, have RYA Instructor qualifications. Our aim is to help you learn and improve in a friendly and enjoyable way both on and off the water.

All courses will take place at the Penarth Yacht Club (PYC) at our clubhouse located on the Penarth Esplanade next to the RNLI Lifeboat station (postcode CF64 3AU), with sailing immediately offshore in the Bristol Channel.

The purpose of the training is to bring new people into the club sailing and racing fleet.

Courses on Offer

We plan to run three courses this year.
RYA Level 1 Start Sailing & RYA Dinghy Level 2 Basic Skills
For those learning to sail we shall be using Mirror dinghies.  You will have an instructor with you until you are competent to sail without one.

RYA Level 3 Better Sailing
For those who have learned to sail and want to improve, you will be following the RYA Level 3 syllabus which will be sailed in Toppers on Thursday evenings and some Saturday afternoons.

Training times

Courses will run on Thursday evenings starting at 6.30pm.  Courses will commence on Thursday 9th May 2019 and continue on Thursday evenings through to 12th September 2019. Training starts promptly at 6.30pm and ends when the weather or light beats us,  but we are normally off the water around 8pm.

Racing and Crewing

There will be opportunities during the season for those on any of the courses who can sail safely round a triangular course to take part in PYC Club friendly races for sail trainees in the Mars Bar Series. You may also be able to try your hand at crewing in Club racing at weekends.

Course prices per season are:

Non-Members £195
Members £90

The training fees for Non Members include a ticket to the Annual Awards Dinner where trophies and Certificates are distributed.

Points to Note

You must be able to swim 25 metres and feel confident in the water.
You will need to provide your own dinghy sailing clothing (i.e. wetsuit or drysuit) or warm but old clothes and something like an old kagoul to keep the wind out. You will need a change of clothing as you will get wet.  Bring a towel as there are hot showers at the Club. You need cash or debit card for a drink in the bar après sail at the Club.
The Club will provide buoyancy aids to wear whilst sail training but when you take up racing we expect you to buy your own.
If you suffer from any ailment or disability which might affect you whilst you are sailing you must send details with your course application.
The Club cannot accept any responsibility for personal injury or loss either afloat or ashore whilst you are attending sail training.
